The horrors of a blocked drain can end up being devastating, backed up waste water flooding into your home leads to all sorts of damage. Not just the water, but everything in it, not just damaging your carpets and floors, but presenting a serious health hazard. Sometimes it is unavoidable, unpredictable and nobodies fault. If you encounter problems with blocked drains, Camborne based South West Drains are here to help.

Blocked drains are most often caused by a build-up of what is sent down it, accumulations of grease, silt and toilet paper eventually build up to the point that the drain is blocked by them. This build up occurs most often at joints and bends in the pipes, and can be considered as the normal wear and tear of any drainage system. It could be caused by a structural defect with the drain, not common with modern ceramic or plastic pipes, but there are many properties throughout the UK which still have pitch fibre pipes installed in the 1960s which will all eventually breakdown and need to be replaced. Metal pipes can corrode, but again these are quite rare.

Another cause can be that the drain has been broken into by tree roots or has been fractured by subsidence. Roots can be surprisingly strong and will actively seek out water, it is not impossible for them to break into even industrial pipes which they then quickly block. Most of what goes down a drain pipe is quite nutritious for plants. Subsidence is problem for everything in the ground and can require a serious amount of work to set to rights.

Unfortunately, one of the most common causes of a blockage is that people have a habit of putting things down the drain which really should be disposed of in a more responsible fashion. Nappies and other absorbant products being flushed down the toilet, grease and fat poured down the kitchen sink, and really quite surprising things end up in drain pipes and end up causing a serious blockage, all of which needs to be dealt with.
